THE BRIEF:

A particularly clallenging garden this one. After carrying out works to the front garden the client asked us to consider a design for the back garden. Originally there stood a huge Plum tree in the middle of the garden which had become too big and produced lots of inedible fruit which quickly became a mess and a haven for wasps. Permission was sought from the local council and we felled the tree and ground out the stump.

FENCING

New closeboard fences were erected all round and new double gates fitted. The unsightly prefab garage was effectively hidden by fixing framed 'Withey' screens to it's walls

DECKING

The client hankered after garden styles from sunnier climes, so with this in mind we came up with a Californian style, outdoor room, which they would scatter cushions and rugs over. Lots of levelling and concrete pads later we were ready to start building the joist structure. As with every good floor, it absolutely needs a solid, well constructed base to support it. A South American Hardwood was chosen and sourced for the decking surface, which we felt gave a warm and sunny feel to the space. Although the wood has a naturally Knotty quality we didn't want the actual surface spoiled by thousands of screw heads and splinters! We were able to find an invisible cleat system that would allow fixing the boards from below. Australian timber oil was used to coat and protect the timber and bring out the lustrous colour

LIGHTING

Finally small ambient LED lights were installed to illuminate the steps and gateway and give a soft light for evening entertainment
